Reconstructive Surgery Noncosmetic

Reconstructive surgery can change your life in extraordinary ways

For plastic surgeons at Aurora BayCare, it’s some of the most rewarding work we do.

Reconstructive surgery is beneficial for people who have experienced a serious injury, those who were born with a congenital abnormality, those with conditions caused by development or disease or those who have undergone previous surgeries. With reconstructive surgery, the goal is to restore the patient's appearance and get them back to their regular activities. Our plastic surgeons treat a wide variety of conditions. Reconstructive procedures can include:

  • Breast reconstruction
  • Breast reduction
  • Melanoma / skin cancer treatment and/or reconstruction
  • Mole removal
  • Scar revision
  • Panniculectomy (excess skin removal)
  • Wound treatment and closure

Breast Reconstruction

For women who have undergone breast surgery due to breast cancer treatments, breast reconstruction can be a physically and emotionally rewarding procedure.

New medical procedures are making it possible for surgeons to create a breast that can come close to matching your natural breasts. Frequently, reconstruction is possible immediately following a mastectomy, so you can wake up with the beginning of your reconstructed breast already in place For many patients, this can lessen the emotional shock that comes with breast removal.

Depending upon your needs and preferences, our plastic surgeons can provide two types of breast reconstruction:

  • Tissue-based reconstruction: Also known as a “flap” procedure, the plastic surgeon uses tissue from your own body to reconstruct the breast.
  • Expander/Implant-based reconstruction: Restores the breast with a tissue expander which is then replaced by a breast implant under the natural breast skin and muscle.

Skin Cancer Treatment

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer. As with any cancer treatment, removing the malignancy is the most important part of care.

Plastic surgeons are experts in diagnosing and treating all types of skin cancer. We provide our patients with safe, effective skin cancer treatment while optimizing the appearance of any future scars.

Following a skin cancer treatment, our plastic surgeons will continue to provide follow up and monitoring until the wound is fully healed.

Mole Removal

Mole removal may occur for a variety of reasons such as improving your appearance, reducing discomfort (e.g. if a mole rubs against your clothing) or diagnosing potential skin cancer.

Most moles are benign, or harmless. However some moles may be an indication of skin cancer. See your doctor if you have moles that exhibit any of the following signs:

  • Sudden change in size, color, shape, or sensation
  • A mixture of colors, including black or red
  • Irregular edges
  • Scaling, flaking, oozing or bleeding
  • Raised with a hard lump inside
  • Itchy or tender

If you are concerned about a mole that looks different from others, call your doctor.

Scar Revision

Scar revision can reduce the appearance of scars caused by either injury or surgery. Depending on the severity of your scar, a scar revision could also help restore form and function. Scar treatment procedures may include steroid injections, nonoperative scar therapy, scar revision and/or laser treatments.
