You need a healthy retina in order to see well. The retina is the thin lining at the back of your eye that detects light and passes impulses to your optic nerve. In front of your retina, your eye is filled with a clear gel called the vitreous. The vitreous helps your eye maintain its shape, acts as a shock absorber, and transmits light to the retina.

Common retina and vitreous conditions include:

• Diabetic retinopathy
• Flashes and floaters
• Macular degeneration
• Macular holes
• Retinal detachment
• Retinal tears and holes

We use the latest diagnostic and treatment technologies available including laser, ultrasound, and ophthalmic imaging. Many treatments, including laser surgery and intraocular injections, are performed at BayCare Clinic Eye Specialists. However, most other surgical procedures are performed at Aurora BayCare Medical Center.

Early Treatment Saves Sight

See an eye care specialist for regular eye exams and call us right away if you see flashes, floating shadows drifting across your vision, or other vision distortions. The earlier we see you, the more we can do to ensure your eyes are healthy and save your vision.

• Macular Degeneration: There is no cure, but age-related macular degeneration treatments may prevent severe vision loss or slow the progression of the disease considerably.
• Diabetic Retinopathy: This condition occurs when high blood sugar causes damage to blood vessels in the retina. Laser treatments can stabilize retinopathy complications and are most successful when problems are detected early.

Patients are referred to us by their eye care specialist or primary care provider. Whether you require eye surgery or less invasive treatments, our goal is to help you clearly understand your diagnosis and options. We can involve your primary care physician, family members and caregivers in treatment discussions, if desired.
