Adult strabismus occurs when the eyes are not aligned properly. Often, this condition can be readily repaired with eye surgery.

Aurora BayCare offers adult strabismus surgery in partnership with BayCare Clinic Eye Specialists. Strabismus is a condition in which the eyes point in different directions. This is sometimes known as being cross-eyed or having a lazy eye. Your eyes may drift or cross, or one may be higher than the other.

Most adults with strabismus have had the condition since they were kids. However, some medical conditions can trigger strabismus in adults who have no prior history. Possible causes include stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid disease, Myasthenia Gravis, or head trauma.

Strabismus Surgery

Strabismus occurs because of an imbalance in your eye muscles. In adult strabismus surgery, the goal is to realign the eye by changing the length or position of these muscles.

When possible, we use an adjustable suture method to correct the alignment. With an adjustable suture, the sutures are secured with temporary knots. Shortly after your surgery, your eye alignment will be reevaluated. Depending on your results, your eye surgeon may tighten or loosen the sutures. Once your eyes are in proper alignment, your surgeon will secure the suture permanently in place.
