Urinary Incontinence

Incontinence is treatable

Aurora BayCare urology specialists offer the full spectrum of incontinence treatments.  No need to put up with leaking urine any longer.

Types of Urinary Incontinence
While there are four distinct types of urinary incontinence, “stress" and "urge" incontinence are the two most common types, comprising nearly 90% of all cases.

  • Stress incontinence: urinary leakage normally triggered by coughing, sneezing, laughing, bending or lifting
  • Urge incontinence: characterized by a sudden need to use the restroom, an uncontrollable flow of urine and increased urinary frequency
  • Overflow incontinence: frequent or constant dribbling and an inability to completely empty the bladder
  • Mixed incontinence: a combination of symptoms associated with more than one type of incontinence

At Aurora BayCare, you will work with a multidisciplinary team of subspecialists, (including highly experienced urologist specialists and urogynecologists), and have access to the latest in treatment options for incontinence, including:

  • Behavioral techniques
  • Medical management
  • Biofeedback
  • Abdominal surgery
  • Vaginal reconstructive surgery (cystocele, rectocele, prolapse)
  • Incontinence surgery
  • Physical therapy

Your doctor may recommend bladder suspension surgery if you have moderate to severe stress incontinence that does not improve with non-invasive treatments such as physiotherapy or medication.

Single Incision Mid-Urethral Sling

Our urologists pioneered the use of the single incision mid urethral sling in our region.  This is a less invasive surgical approach to treating urinary incontinence and improving bladder control.

A urethral sling is a piece of surgical tape that supports the urethra. It supports the mid section of the urethra when the muscles and nerves that typically provide this support are weak.  This operation is often performed in combination with other procedures.

Benefits of this minimally invasive surgery include:

  • Faster recovery
  • Short hospitalization time—typically one night
  • Less pain
  • Smaller incisions

Bladder suspension surgery is effective specifically for treating stress incontinence.  If in doubt, request a second opinion.  The number one reason surgery fails is an incorrect diagnosis.
