Childrens Urology
Treating more than urinary tract conditions
Our providers deliver the highest quality medical care and sensitivity necessary in helping kids cope with urologic challenges. Pediatric urology involves the specialized care of children and young adults who have conditions involving the kidney, bladder, urethra, and reproductive organs.
Urological and Kidney Health
Our board certified pediatric urologists provide leading-edge urological care. We understand that conditions of the bladder and other urogenital parts may be embarrassing and uncomfortable, especially for children and young adults. We know how to be sensitive to your child’s feelings and privacy throughout treatment and will help you have an active part in the care process. A nurse practitioner is also available to treat most conditions.
Look to Aurora BayCare for help with urological conditions, ranging from simple to complex:
- Urologic conditions detected before birth
- Hydroceles (fluid filled sac surrounding testicle)
- Hydronephrosis (stretching of the kidney where urine is collected)
- Hypospadias (opening of urethra on underside of penis)
- Incontinence
- Multicystic dysplastic kidney (malformation of kidney during fetal development)
- Prune belly syndrome (congenital absence of abdominal muscles)
- Reflux
- Undescended testicles
- Ureteropelvic junction obstruction (slowing or stopping of urine due to kidney blockage)
- Ureteroceles (congenital abnormality creating a sac at the ureter opening)
- Urinary tract infections
- Vesicouretereal reflux (backward flow of urine into the kidneys)
- Voiding dysfunction
At Aurora BayCare, we are committed to providing the least invasive treatment approach for your child’s urological condition. Treatment options may be non-surgical. For example, biofeedback and other physical therapy methods may be used to heighten your child’s senses to assist with bladder control.
Urinary Tract Health
Urinary tract health is important to your child’s overall health. When your doctor treats a urinary tract infection (UTI), additional imaging tests may be prescribed to determine the cause. Frequent UTIs in children can lead to kidney damage later on.
Symptoms of a UTI may include:
- A frequent need to urinate
- Bedwetting
- Burning or pain when urinating
- Cloudy urine, or blood in the urine
- Fever
- Strong odor in urine
- Voiding Dysfunction
Bedwetting comes to mind most frequently when thinking about children and voiding dysfunction, but there are other wetting symptoms that deserve attention, including:
- Frequent Urination – voiding frequently during the day
- Urinary Urgency – needing to urinate as soon as the urge is recognized
- Bedwetting – urine loss while asleep
- Daytime Incontinence – urinary loss of control causing damp undergarments or a need to change clothes
- Stress Incontinence – urine leakage due to straining, such as coughing, laughing, or sneezing
- Post-void Leakage – urinary loss of control immediately after, or a few minutes after voiding.
As always, our pediatric urologists’ goal is to minimize your child’s pain and preserve normal organ function. We do everything to ensure that your child enjoys a full recovery and can get back to regular activities as soon as possible.
