Spasticity Management
The sooner you seek treatment, the more we can do to maximize function and maintain your independence
Spasticity is a type of muscle stiffness that can occur as a result of damage to the spinal cord or brain. It is common among people with stroke, multiple sclerosis, and brain trauma.
The Spasticity Management Program provides comprehensive care for people with spasticity and uncontrolled muscle spasms.
Spasticity is characterized by tight or stiff muscles and exaggerated reflexes that may interfere with voluntary muscle movements. Spasticity can have a profound effect on people. Often, stiffness makes it difficult to walk, eat, dress, bathe, get in and out of bed, or go to the bathroom. Sometimes, spasticity occurs in conjunction with painful spasms in the thighs or legs.
Treatments for Spasticity
Our rehabilitative team evaluates each individual and discusses treatment recommendations with the patient, family members and caregivers. In many cases, spasticity can be managed effectively with a variety of treatments.
Treatment options include the following:
- Physical and occupational therapy
- Oral medications
- Neuromuscular electro-stimulation
- Orthotics and other assistive devices
- Botulinum (Botox®) and injection therapies
- Baclofen pump (ITB therapy)
Treatment goals typically include improving range of motion, reducing energy requirements, facilitating movement, lowering caregiver burden, and enhancing patient independence.
Our doctors encourage patients to see us at the earliest stages of their spasticity problems. The sooner you seek treatment, the more we can do to maximize function and maintain your independence.
