Physical Medicine And Rehabilitation
We take the whole body into account, identifying problems and restoring function—without surgery
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) is a medical specialty focused on restoring health and functional abilities to people with acute or chronic disabilities. We are rehabilitation physicians (also known as physiatrists) who specialize in conditions affecting the muscles, bones, and nerves.
We provide leadership to multidisciplinary teams concerned with restoring your physical, social, and occupational functions. Our goal is to maximize your abilities and improve your quality of life.
Three Areas of Medical Care
We treat patients of all ages, primarily in three areas of medical care:
- Musculoskeletal injuries and acute pain – including sports injuries, work injuries, back and neck pain, and arthritis.
- Neurological rehabilitation – including brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, stroke and developmental disorders.
- Rehabilitation for severe functional limitations – including traumatic injuries, cancer-related disabilities, and post-surgical recovery.
Treatment Options
As rehabilitation specialists, we offer a broad array of treatments.
We emphasize non-surgical treatment, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, body mechanics, and acupuncture.
After a comprehensive evaluation, our physicians will design a rehabilitation program based on your unique condition and medical history. When needed, we prescribe medications, prosthetic devices, orthotics and other assistive devices. We may also provide interventional services to treat pain and may offer Botox and intrathecal drug delivery for conditions such as spasticity.
Family members will be included in the rehabilitation process as much as possible and provided the education they need to help you achieve improved levels of cognitive, emotional, and physical functioning.
