What conditions does sports medicine treat?
Getting injured while working out or playing a sport can throw you off your game. Our sports medicine doctors specialize in:
- Foot and ankle treatment
- Hand and wrist treatment
- Hip treatment
- Knee treatment
- Shoulder and elbow treatment
We treat all sports injuries, from the most common to the complex:
- Fractures and dislocations can happen suddenly or with repetitive motion like running, or during a fall.
- Bruising, inflammation and swelling can occur in the muscles. Overuse or injury can also cause inflammation and pain in tissue such as the bursae, ligaments or tendons.
- Sprains and strains can injure tendons and ligaments as a result of sudden changes in direction or exaggerated movements.
What does a sports medicine doctor do?
Sports medicine physicians diagnose and treat sports-related orthopedic conditions and injuries to help you heal and regain function. Our fellowship-trained doctors have extra training to help them determine how to design treatment programs tailored specifically to you and your sport.
Through nonsurgical and surgical treatments and rehabilitation, we’ll help keep you in top competitive shape. Supplemental therapies could include endurance training and athletic training.

Nonoperative orthopedics
Surgery isn’t always the answer when a sports-related injury occurs. We begin with conservative treatments like:
- Ice
- Medication
- Rest
- Splinting and casting
Our regenerative medicine specialists offer new treatments such as platelet-rich plasma injections. These treatments help your body heal itself by replacing damaged cells with new healthy cells.
Our team uses cartilage restoration therapies to repair and replace damaged cartilage that can occur with repetitive movements or arthritis.
Custom orthotics
Splints, braces and inserts, known as orthotics, can help support your body and prevent further damage as your injury heals. Our sports medicine specialists can also design a custom orthotic specifically for you.
Surgical treatments
When nonoperative treatments don’t relieve pain, our orthopedic surgeons perform advanced procedures. Each of our fellowship-trained surgeons has extra education and training in their specialty.
Our surgeons use minimally invasive procedures and arthroscopy to help you recover quickly. With arthroscopy, surgeons insert an instrument with a small, attached camera (arthroscope). They use arthroscopy to see, diagnose and repair damage through small incisions.
