Gynecologic oncologists: Why choose Aurora BayCare Medical Center?

Our gynecologic oncologists treat the full range of cancers of the female reproductive system with precise diagnosis and care. Program highlights include:

  • Highly trained cancer specialists: A board-certified gynecologic oncologist leads our team of specialists. This expertise means your care team is qualified to identify your symptoms to help detect and treat even the most complicated gynecologic cancers.
  • Leading-edge treatments: We offer the most advanced therapies for gynecologic cancers. Our surgeons are experts in complex operations, including robot-assisted minimally invasive procedures that remove cancer and help preserve fertility. We also use specialized treatments such as intraperitoneal (IP) chemotherapy. This treatment targets cancer-destroying drugs directly to the abdomen.
  • Single-day care: You’ll see all the cancer specialists devoted to your treatment in a single day. Our team works together on your personalized treatment plan in our Multidisciplinary Cancer Clinic. There’s no need to schedule separate visits, so your treatment begins right away.
  • Nationally recognized cancer care: The Commission on Cancer, a group that works to improve cancer care and survival nationally, has accredited our cancer care program. This designation means that our program meets or exceeds national standards for diagnosis and treatment.

What types of cancer does a gynecologic oncologist treat?

The image shows the location of each of the following types of gynecologic cancers; uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, fallopian tube cancer, cervical cancer, vaginal cancer and vulvar cancer.
The illustration shows different types of gynecologic cancer. Our gynecological oncologists are trained to treat all types.

Our gynecologic oncologists provide personalized treatment and diagnosis for all types of gynecological cancers. We treat:

  • Cervical cancer: Starts in the cervix (the entrance to the uterus). Cervical cancer is largely preventable with the HPV vaccine.
  • Fallopian tube cancer: Begins in the fallopian tubes, which transport ovum (eggs) from the ovaries to the uterus.
  • Ovarian cancer: Grows on the ovaries, which secrete hormones and produce eggs for fertilization.
  • Uterine cancer: Begins in the uterus (womb). Also known as endometrial cancer, it develops in the uterine lining and is the most common gynecologic cancer.
  • Vaginal cancer: Starts in the tissue of the vagina (also known as the birth canal). Vaginal cancer is rare.
  • Vulvar cancer: Grows on the external genitals, known as the vulva. The HPV vaccine may prevent vulvar cancer.

Expert diagnosis

Our board-certified, fellowship-trained gynecologic oncologists have years of experience in diagnosing female cancers. Their certification and training make them experts in pinpointing the exact cancer location and developing advanced treatment plans that fight these tumors.

Advanced gynecologic oncology treatments

You have treatment options in our gynecologic oncology care program. We offer:

  • Robotic surgery: Our surgeons use robotic equipment to find and remove cancer with movements more precise than their own hands can make. This precision helps remove all cancerous tissue and may help preserve fertility. We are part of the first health care system in Wisconsin to perform robotic surgery for reproductive cancers.
  • Intraperitoneal (IP) chemotherapy: This specialized treatment delivers chemotherapy directly into the abdomen, closest to the cancer cells. Our gynecologic oncologists are experts in providing this proven therapy, which is not offered routinely.
  • Treatments based on science: We are researchers with the national Gynecologic Oncology Group, now known as the GOG Foundation. We lead clinical trials and regularly review cancer research, ensuring that you can access the latest gynecological oncology treatments right here.
