Sports physical therapy residency
Overview
The Aurora BayCare Medical Center Sports Residency is a 12-month post-professional physical therapy education program designed to prepare residents for advanced practice in sports physical therapy. Our program offers a variety of learning experiences with a focus on one-on-one mentoring with Board-Certified Clinical Specialists in Sports Physical Therapy.
Residency components include:
- Independent patient care in a sports physical therapy clinic
- One-on-one clinical mentoring with Board-Certified Clinical Specialists in Sports Physical Therapy
- In-person and online academic coursework designed to provide the basis for advanced clinical practice
- Physician rounding and observation
- Local athletic event and outreach sports medicine coverage
Completion and Certification
Completion of the Aurora BayCare Medical Center Sports Residency will prepare residents for advanced practice in sports physical therapy and for successful completion of the Sports Clinical Specialist Board Certification Examination administered by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS).
Accreditation
The Aurora BayCare Medical Center Sports Residency is accredited by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE) as a post-professional residency program for physical therapists in sports.

Program Goals
- Provide a comprehensive clinical and academic curriculum focused on developing a strong knowledge base and clinical reasoning skills in sports physical therapy
- Prepare residents to deliver excellent care and become experts in the management of athletes and active individuals with sports-related injuries, surgeries, and other conditions
- Provide residents with a strong knowledge of sport-specific proficiencies such as return-to-sport testing and sport-specific biomechanical analysis
- Engage residents in self-reflection and professional growth necessary to become leaders within the sports physical therapy profession and the community
- Prepare residents to sit for the Sports Clinical Specialist Board Certification Examination by meeting all designated requirements for application through the ABPTS
Program Requirements
- Valid licensure or anticipated to meet eligibility requirements for licensure as a physical therapist in the State of Wisconsin at the residency start date
- Graduated from an accredited physical therapy program prior to the residency start date
- Completed the Acute Management of Injury and Illness requirement as outlined by the ABPTS Sports Specialty Council prior to the residency start date
- Passion for practicing within the field of sports physical therapy

- Three letters of recommendation
- Supplemental essay questions explaining your interest in our residency and why you are an appropriate candidate for our program

Match Process
The Aurora BayCare Medical Center Sports Residency is participating in a uniform and standardized Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program Match for the current application cycle.
All communication regarding this match process will come through the education management software EXXAT after receiving an offer to interview with our program.
