Ankle replacement surgery

When nonoperative orthopedics don’t improve pain or function, you have other options. Your doctor may recommend ankle replacement if you’re healthy but have advanced arthritis or joint damage.

We use leading-edge technology to tailor your artificial joint precisely to your body. You’ll have a CT scan to create images that your surgeon uses to determine joint size and placement.

What to expect during surgery

In total ankle replacement, surgeons use an artificial joint (prosthesis) to replace damaged bone and tissue. Manufacturers make these prosthetics from metal, with a plastic part that simulates cartilage.

During surgery, our surgeons remove damaged sections of bone and attach the new joint to the remaining bone. They may add screws to help stabilize the joint.

What to expect after surgery

Once your new ankle joint is in place, you’ll work with our therapy and rehabilitation specialists. The team creates personalized orthopedic rehabilitation programs. Special exercises strengthen your new ankle, improving flexibility and mobility.
