Plaque buildup causes your arteries to narrow and harden. This can slow or even stop blood flow. With less blood flow, your cells and organs get less of the essential oxygen they need to survive.

  • Stay active. Exercise regularly.
  • Eat a healthy diet. Include whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

  • Don’t smoke.
  • If you have diabetes, work with your doctor to manage your disease.
  • Take medication as prescribed to reduce your risk factors. This may include high cholesterol or high blood pressure medication.
