Single Site Robotic Surgery
Minimally invasive surgery gets even less invasive with single site robotic surgery
Aurora BayCare Medical Center is among the first hospitals in the region to offer single site robotic surgery. The da Vinci® Single-Site™ system allows our surgeons to use just one tiny incision, through the navel. The result is a virtually scarless surgical experience.
The single site system is the most advanced technology available for robotic surgery. Procedures are performed through a single incision in the belly button, using state-of-the-art precision instruments.
As a result, patients have almost no visible scarring. Other common benefits include minimal pain, low blood loss, and shorter hospital stays. Single site robotic surgery patients typically go home the same day.
Single Site Robotic Procedures at ABMC*:
- Single Site Robotic Gallbladder Surgery (cholecystectomy)
- Single Site Robotic Hysterectomy
*Robotic surgery advances quickly. More single site surgical options may be available.
How Single Site Robotic Surgery Works
Like other robotic procedures, your surgeon will sit at a robotic console, viewing high-definition, 3-D images of the surgical area. Your surgeon will use controls below the viewer to manipulate tiny surgical instruments and a camera inside your body. The da Vinci® robot then translates those hand movements into more precise instrument controls, detecting and filtering out any natural tremors in the surgeon’s hand movements.
With single site robotic surgery, both the camera and the surgical instruments are inserted through a single incision. If the procedure cannot be completed through one incision, your surgeon can make additional incisions and complete the surgery as a standard robotic procedure.
Single Site Hysterectomy
One single incision through the belly button. That’s all it takes for surgeons at Aurora BayCare Medical Center to perform a hysterectomy using the latest advancement in robotic surgery.
A standard robotic hysterectomy involves four to five incisions in the abdomen. Patients who opt for the single site procedure get a significantly enhanced cosmetic outcome with virtually no visible scarring.
Single Site Gallbladder Surgery
Typically, robotic gallbladder surgery requires four to five incisions in the abdomen. But now, the da Vinci® Single-Site system enables our surgeons to remove your gallbladder through a single, 1-inch incision in your belly button.
Recovery time is typically less than other minimally invasive surgeries. Patients will likely experience all the other benefits of robotic surgery, including smaller incision, reduced pain, less blood loss and a faster recovery.
