Robotic Hernia Surgery

A hernia occurs when part of an internal organ or tissue bulges through an area of muscle, usually in the abdomen. Common causes include weak muscles, straining to lift heavy objects, or severe coughs.

Aurora BayCare offers robotic-assisted hernia repair using the da Vinci® Surgical System. This gives the surgeon more control, better visibility, and high levels of precision.

Robotic surgery may be the appropriate choice for several types of hernias:

  • An inguinal hernia occurs in the groin’s abdominal wall. During surgery, bulging tissue is pushed back in and the abdominal wall is strengthened with sutures. Sometimes mesh is placed over the hernia site for additional support.
  • An incisional hernia occurs along an incision from a prior surgery. This type of hernia repair typically involves a special surgical mesh to reinforce the incision site.
  • A hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach pushes upward through the diaphragm. Larger hiatal hernias often trigger chronic acid reflux, chest pain, and nausea. During hiatal surgery repair, the surgeon pulls the stomach back into the abdomen and repairs the defect in the diaphragm. The stomach may be held in place by anchoring it to the esophagus with stitches or stables.

Less Pain and Faster Recovery

Robotic-assisted hernia surgery provides the following benefits:

  • Smaller incision sites and less impact on surrounding tissue
  • Less bleeding
  • Less pain and scarring
  • Less risk of infection
  • Shorter hospital stays and quick recovery
  • Quicker return to your regular activity

With robotic-assisted surgery, many hernia patients can go home the same day. Learn more about the benefits in our robotic surgery FAQs.
