Provenge® immunotherapy at Aurora BayCare Medical Center

Our cancer experts lead and participate in cancer research that drives the newest treatment strategies. We offer Provenge, the first FDA-approved immunotherapy treatment for advanced prostate cancer.

It’s important to know that Provenge is:

• Personalized: Specialists draw your blood and send it to a lab, where scientists use a machine to collect some of your immune cells. Using a specific protein, or antigen, scientists teach your immune cells to recognize and defend against prostate cancer.
• Given in three doses: We’ll draw your blood for immune cell harvesting, a process known as apheresis, about three days before each Provenge injection. We’ll wait about two weeks between each dose.
• Not for all prostate cancer types: Doctors use Provenge only in men with no or few prostate cancer symptoms, known as hormone-refractory prostate cancer. This condition is also known as metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer.

Is Provenge right for you?

Our prostate cancer specialists recommend Provenge for certain men. Doctors might recommend Provenge if you:

• Are taking hormone therapy and have rising prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels.
• Have cancer that has metastasized, or spread, to other parts of your body.
• Aren’t taking any pain medications such as narcotics to manage cancer-related pain.
