Knee surgeries
Our orthopedic specialists are at the forefront of surgical techniques for treating knee injuries. We were the first hospital in the region to introduce minimally invasive knee replacement. We also offer:
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction
An ACL tear is damage to the strong ligament at the knee’s center. Our orthopedic surgeons use sophisticated grafting techniques to restore stability and prevent damage to knee cartilage in ACL tears. In grafting, surgeons replace damaged tissue with tissue from elsewhere in your body (autograft) or use donated tissue (allograft).
Doctors use arthroscopy to see and repair damaged tissue. They insert an arthroscope, a thin instrument with a tiny attached camera, and miniature surgical instruments through small incisions.
During ACL reconstruction, surgeons will:
- Make small incisions near the knee joint
- Insert tiny surgical instruments through the incisions
- Remove and repair damaged tissue
- Replace the damaged ligament with a healthy ligament graft
Meniscus surgery
Surgeons use arthroscopic knee surgery to repair tears to the meniscus, the knee’s cushioning cartilage. Specialists may stitch torn tissue together or remove portions of damaged tissue using small surgical instruments.
Our surgeons led the way in developing a technique called meniscus transplant for severe meniscus tears. With transplant surgery, doctors replace damaged tissue with healthy cartilage from a donor.
Knee realignment
Knee realignment, also known as knee osteotomy, is surgery to bring the knee into proper alignment. Surgeons make a cut near the kneecap in either the shinbone or the thighbone, removing a small piece of bone.
Removing this piece of bone helps align the leg and reduce pressure on the knee. Body weight shifts to the healthy side of the knee, reducing pain.
