Lung cancer risk factors

Tobacco, pollution and asbestos, a mineral used in insulation, can cause lung cancer. If you’re a current or former smoker, or worked with or near asbestos, talk to your doctor about screening.

Screenings we offer

We use the latest techniques to find and diagnose lung cancer. Our tests include:

  • Low-dose CT scan: Our specialists use this low-radiation chest scan to find cancer cells before symptoms appear.
  • Robotic bronchoscopy: Our experts use a computer-guided flexible instrument (bronchoscope) to create 3D lung images and take tissue samples. We were the first hospital in Wisconsin to offer robotic bronchoscopy.

Lung cancer prevention

You can take certain steps to help prevent lung cancer. Our experts recommend that you:

  • Quit smoking
  • Limit exposure to pollution
  • Wear protective gear if you must work with asbestos
  • Check your home for asbestos and radon, a radioactive gas
  • Avoid second-hand smoke
  • Treat tuberculosis (TB) and other lung diseases early
