Gail Model risk assessment

The Gail Model is a computerized tool using statistical, or data, analysis to estimate breast cancer risk. This tool identifies risk for invasive breast cancer during the next five years, up to age 90 (known as lifetime risk). The Gail Model determines risk using:

Age-related factors

The model uses your current age, as well as the age you were at your first menstrual period. Risk analysis also considers the age you were when you gave birth to your first child.

Genetic factors

Your race and ethnicity, as well as how many of your family members have had breast cancer, are factors in the risk calculation.

Medical factors

If you’ve had biopsies, and a history of abnormal cells on a biopsy, the Gail Model uses these factors when calculating risk.

Managing breast cancer risk

If Gail Model analysis shows you’re at high risk, specialists may recommend additional screening or preventive treatment. Screenings and treatments include:

  • Frequent breast exams: A physical breast exam twice each year.
  • Annual mammogram: Mammogram once each year, regardless of age.
  • Breast MRI: A test using radio waves and a strong magnet to create a detailed image of the breasts.
  • Chemoprevention: Taking certain medicines, such as chemotherapy drugs, to help prevent breast cancer.
  • Mastectomy: Surgery to remove the breasts to lower breast cancer risk.

Breast cancer prevention

You can lower your breast cancer risk. Our experts recommend that you:

  • Examine your breasts: Look and feel for lumps, dimpled skin and nipple discharge. Have a clinical breast exam (an exam done by a doctor) every year.
  • Have regular mammograms: If you’re over 40, have a mammogram every year (or as often as your doctor recommends). Schedule your mammogram today.
  • Live a healthy lifestyle: Eat a healthy diet, exercise each day and maintain a healthy weight.
  • Limit alcohol: Don’t drink more than three alcoholic drinks each week.
  • See a genetic counselor: Have genetic testing if you have a family history of breast cancer.
