Diagnostic tests for neurologic cancer: Why choose Aurora BayCare Medical Center?
The cancer specialists at Aurora have passed rigorous tests and received extra training, making them experts in recognizing brain cancer symptoms. We use the most advanced techniques to find and diagnose brain tumors, including:
Sophisticated neuro-imaging tools
Our neuroradiologists use the latest technologies to produce detailed images of the brain and spinal cord. In addition to standard MRI and CT scans, we offer state-of-the-art nuclear imaging tests, which identify cancer in the earliest stages.
With nuclear tests, specialists inject a small amount of radioactive material, known as a radiotracer, into a vein. Neuroradiologists use a special camera to follow the material as it flows through the brain. An area of the brain with higher chemical activity levels, which may indicate a tumor, appears as a bright spot on the scan. We offer these nuclear imaging tests:
- Perfusion and diffusion MRI: Creates images that help experts see the amount of blood (known as volume), plus how it flows in tumors. This information helps specialists understand how treatment is working, and whether tumors are growing.
- Positron emission tomography (PET) scan: Shows the structures within the brain, and how the brain is functioning.
- Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scan: Provides images of the brain and its function to help experts see treatment effects, plus tumor growth or changes. Doctors use this information to plan and adjust treatments.
Image-guided frameless stereotactic biopsy
Our neuroradiologists use a computer system to guide a small biopsy needle into the brain with great accuracy. They use the needle to collect tissue samples for precise brain tumor diagnosis.
With previous technology, a doctor attached a rigid frame to the skull with screws. Our frameless system eliminates the need to attach a frame, making the test safer and more comfortable.
Neuropsychology
Our trained neuropsychology specialists provide expert assessment to determine if cancer or cancer treatments affect how you think or feel. Neuropsychologists then work closely with brain cancer specialists to develop tailored treatment or rehabilitation plans that help you feel your best.
