On October 3, Aurora BayCare Medical Center's award ceremony honored several physician researchers and leaders in medical education for their contributions to innovative health care advancements and training of the next generation of care providers

"Aurora BayCare is committed to the continuous improvement of patient care and outcomes, and one of the ways we do that is by contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the medical community," said Annette Paul, manager of clinical research at Aurora BayCare Medical Center. "This awards event is our opportunity to recognize the leading-edge research and clinical trials being conducted by innovative providers at Aurora BayCare."

Dr.Bosco Award

Awardees include:

  • Dr. Stephen Brada, Anesthesiology - Educator of the Year Award
  • Pediatrics - Medical Education Department of the Year
  • Dr. Byron Crouse, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health - Lifetime Achievement Award
  • Dr. M. Ziad Darkhabani, Interventional Neurology - Principal Investigator of the Year Award
  • Dr. John Bosco, Gastroenterology - Innovation Award
  • Dr. Gerald Eckardt, Neurological Surgery and Dr. Daniel McKenna, Bariatric Medicine / General Surgery - Principal Investigators in Clinical Research Award
  • Amanda Thompson, NP, and Peggy Process, RN, Interventional Neurology; Julie Zeeman, CNS, Neurology; Melisa Engebose, RN, Stroke Nurse Navigator; and Jennifer Meredith, Quality Improvement Coordinator - Research Support Award
  • Dr. Dhimant R. Patel, medical oncology - Aurora Research Institute's President's Award

"The Lifetime Achievement Award, given to Dr. Byron Crouse, recognizes an outstanding physician teacher who has had an impact on medical students and has dedicated his/her professional life to the development and improvement of medical education," said Nita Jensen, Medical Education Coordinator.

Aurora BayCare conducts patient-centered research in two areas: investigator-initiated research and clinical trials.

Investigator-initiated research includes project and programs that Aurora BayCare physicians develop within their special interest area. These include growing studies in neurology, neurosurgery, electrophysiology/cardiology, sepsis/emergency department, orthopedics/pain management, oncology, gastrointestinal health and women's health.

Numerous cancer clinical trials have been ongoing at Aurora BayCare, but research has expanded far beyond cancer trials. For example, Aurora BayCare has research options for patients undergoing cesarean section and with stroke, atrial fibrillation/heart disease, multiple sclerosis, SI-bone/pelvic joint and more. Patients have access to more than one hundred open research studies at Aurora BayCare and more than 300 open trials throughout Aurora Health Care.
