Aurora BayCare Medical Center hosted its 10th annual Fall Research and Medical Education Reception on Oct. 4, 2018.
The event is dedicated to highlighting and celebrating achievements in research and medical education. The ceremony includes awards to recognize the physicians and team members who stand out for their leadership and contributions to the field of medicine.
"These awards recognize the dedication and ingenuity of our doctors, educators and research team," said Dr. Michael Medich, director of medical education. "These team members are dedicated to educating tomorrow's caregivers and transforming medical care. I'm honored to serve among them and lift up their work to the Aurora BayCare community."
Awardees from the 2018 event, emceed by Dr. Medich and Dr. Brian Johnson, include:
- Dr. James Napier, Neurology - Medical Educator of the Year
- Neurology - Medical Education Department of the Year
- Dr. Tom Halloin, Obstetrics - Medical Education Lifetime Achievement Award
- Dr. Diane Mayland, Otolaryngology - Medical Education Lifetime Achievement Award
- Nita Jensen, Medical Education Coordinator - Most Valuable Person in Medical Education
- Dr. Ubaid Nawaz, Hematology and Oncology - Principal Investigator of the Year
- Dr. Vinay Mehta, Electrophysiology - Innovation Award
- Mitchell Voss, Occupational Therapist - Principal Investigator in Clinical Research Award
A highlight included an announcement of Aurora Research Institute's donation to Greater Gift, a nonprofit organization that marries appreciation of clinical research participants with corporate philanthropy to improve global health through deployment of vaccines to children in need worldwide.
"People who participate in research often receive no personal benefit, but their participation offers hope to others in need of new drugs, treatments and techniques that improve countless lives," said Kelly Piacsek, vice president of patient-centered research for Aurora Research Institute. "Because they are doing something important to help others, we wanted to do the same."
Aurora BayCare has a tradition of teaching excellence, including teaching more medical students than any other hospital system in Northeast Wisconsin. The hospital partners with University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health to train and shape future doctors across 30 different clinical areas.
Through Aurora Research Institute, the hospital also conducts patient-centered research and clinical trials in a variety of specialties.
